Mayer has hit safely in the first seven games for Double-A Portland. He's slashing .357/.387/.500 with one home run, five RBI, two steals and seven runs scored. Mayer is healthy after a 2023 season ended early due to a shoulder injury that he said he was feeling long before he was shut down in August. It's reasonably expected that the highly regarded prospect will make his MLB debut in 2025, but this season may not be out of the question. Given the season-ending injury to Trevor Story (shoulder), it's not hard to envision Mayer getting the call later in 2024.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shoulder no longer an issue
Mayer said Wednesday that he's now "ready to go" after his 2023 season ended due to a left shoulder injury, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Mayer wound up missing the last month of the minor-league season due to left shoulder inflammation, an injury which he admitted Wednesday had been bothering him for a while before he was shut down. It could be at least partly to blame for why the 21-year-old slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Double-A Portland. Mayer is likely headed back to Portland to start 2024 as he looks to regain his prospect momentum.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shut down with shoulder injury
Mayer (shoulder) has been shut down for the remainder of the season at Double-A Portland, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Mayer has missed the last month of action with left shoulder inflammation. Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham said of Mayer on Wednesday that the team is "very pleased with the progress he has made so far," but the goal at this point is the "strengthening of his shoulder, so he can have a full, normal offseason." Mayer batted .290/.366/.524 for High-A Greenville but slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Portland. It was an aggressive assignment given that he won't turn 21 until December. The young shortstop is one of the organization's top prospects.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Lands on IL
Mayer was placed on the 7-day injured list by Double-A Portland on Saturday with left shoulder inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. The move is retroactive to Aug. 3, so he can return as soon as Thursday. Mayer is 1-for-21 with 12 strikeouts over the last five games and has struggled overall since his promotion to Portland. The 20-year-old shortstop, considered one of the organization's top prospects, is slashing .189/.254/.355 over 43 games in Double-A.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Breaks through at Double-A
Mayer went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored for Double-A Portland on Sunday. Mayer can let out a big sigh of relief, as he connected for his first hits against Double-A pitching. After he was promoted from High-A Greenville last week, Boston's top prospect was hitless in his first 16 at-bats for the Sea Dogs. If the common-held belief that making the jump from High-A to Double-A is the most difficult, it may be more challenging for a 20-year-old like Mayer.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Heading to Double-A
Mayer was promoted to Double-A Portland on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Mayer was on a tear at High-A Greenville to begin the 2023 campaign, slashing .291/.365/.532 with seven home runs, 33 RBI, 23 runs and four steals over 34 games. Boston's top prospect will now have a chance to prove himself at the Double-A level.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Gets timing down
Mayer went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's game for High-A Greenville. Mayer had scuffled out of the gate with just two hits over his first 20 at-bats before breaking out Saturday. He told Brendan Samson of MLB.com that he'd been late on swings early in the season but got his timing down Saturday. "I just made sure today that I got my foot down early, started a little earlier and got a good pitch to hit and I was able to do that today," Mayer said. The 20-year-old shortstop prospect slashed .280/.399/.489 with 13 home runs and 17 steals over 91 combined games between Single-A Salem and Greenville in 2022.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Headed to High-A
Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham confirmed Monday that Mayer has been promoted from Single-A Salem to High-A Greenville, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Boston will be moving two of its top selections from the 2020 and 2021 draft classes to Greenville, as power-hitting third baseman Blaze Jordan will also be making the jump from Salem. Mayer, a 19-year-old shortstop who was the No. 4 overall selection in 2021, received the promotion after slashing .286/.406/.504 with nine home runs and 16 stolen bases to go with a 16.8 percent walk rate across 308 plate appearances for Salem.... Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Dealing with low-back tightness
Mayer was removed from the first game of a doubleheader at Single-A Salem due to low-back tightness, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Mayer isn't in the lineup for the second game of Sunday's twin bill, but the team is calling his removal from the matinee a precautionary measure. The 19-year-old should tentatively be considered day-to-day.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Returns from IL
Mayer (wrist) returned from the injured list and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored for Single-A Salem on Monday. Mayer had undergone testing for a sprained wrist and was found to have no significant damage. Monday's game was his first action since May 19. Mayer is slashing .333/.391/.513 over 87 plate appearance (18 games) for Salem.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Placed on injured list
Mayer (wrist) was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer dealt with a wrist injury for several weeks in late April and early May, but he recently returned to the field and went 6-for-18 with four doubles, three RBI and a stolen base. The 19-year-old's injury hasn't increased in severity, but he'll land on the IL and undergo further testing since the issue hasn't gone away. It's not yet clear when Mayer will be able to return to game action.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Returns with three doubles
Mayer (wrist) started at shortstop and went 3-for-6 with three doubles and two RBI on Sunday in Single-A Salem's 8-7 loss to Delmarva. Mayer missed approximately two-and-a-half weeks when his sore right wrist first cropped up in late April, but his latest aggravation of the injury didn't cause nearly as long of an absence. He was out of the lineup for four days before returning to action Sunday and providing a season-high three extra-base hits. Assuming he experienced no setbacks coming out of Sunday's contest, Mayer should be capable of handling an everyday role at Salem moving forward.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Day-to-day with wrist issue
Mayer continues to deal with right wrist soreness and will miss a fourth consecutive game for Single-A Salem on Saturday, Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald reports. It sounds like he is day-to-day and could get back in the lineup Sunday, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Mayer returned to action May 10 after missing a little over two weeks, but he has not played in a game since then. The top prospect has a 37.2 percent strikeout rate over his last 39 at-bats, which will be something to monitor once he is healthy.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Gets brief spring taste of majors
Mayer picked up five plate appearances for the Red Sox this spring, going 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts. He's 19 and has never played above rookie ball, so no one expected Mayer to put up numbers in spring training. Last year's No. 4 overall draft pick, he's expected to open 2022 in Low-A, and it'll be worth watching to see whether he can maintain last season's impressive walk rate (14 percent) while getting to his power more often in game action.... Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Swats first pro homer
Mayer went 2-for-6 with a home run, four RBI and an additional run scored for the Florida Complex League Red Sox on Saturday. Mayer, Boston's first-round pick in the 2021 draft, launched his first professional home run, a three-run job. The shortstop is batting .214/.313/.357 with one home run, one double, five RBI and five runs over seven games in the FCL.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Kicks off pro career
Mayer went 0-for-1 with three walks for the FCL Red Sox on Thursday. Mayer made his professional debut in the Florida Complex League with walks in his first three plate appearances before a groundout in his final at-bat. Mayer is Boston's first-round pick (third overall) in the 2021 draft. The left-handed hitting shortstop belted 14 home runs and batted .392 (38-for-97) in 34 games during his final year with Eastlake High School in California.... See More ... See Less
