Player Outlook
Reese Olson spent the first two months with Triple-A Toledo, compiling an unimpressive 6.38 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 10 starts. However, the Tigers needed a healthy arm and Olson had been pitching better in late May, so he was summoned to make his major league debut in early June. He stayed in The Show the rest of the season, starting in 18 of 21 appearances. Olson didn't miss bats at the elevated rate exhibited in the minors, but his control improved greatly. He throws five pitches, including a 95-mph four-seam fastball and a 95-mph sinker, but his best pitch is a slider he utilized 30.6 percent of the time. Still just 24-years-old, there is a good chance Olson can recapture some of the dominance exhibited in the minors, though only his slider is deemed above average according to Stuff+. Olson has carved out a role in the Tigers staff, but he's not assured of being in the Opening Day rotation. Even so, he's displayed enough to be a fantasy asset, with sneaky upside.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Sharp in first win of 2024

Olson (1-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing just an unearned run on three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out four. Kerry Carpenter launched a two-run homer in the first inning, and it proved to be all the offense that Olson and the Tigers' bullpen would need. The right-hander generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 93 pitches, and while the win was his first of the season, the quality start was his fifth in 10 outings. Olson will take a 1.92 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 56.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Boston.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Good to start Saturday

Olson (hip) is listed as the Tigers' probable starter for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The 24-year-old exited his start Monday against the Royals with a bruised hip after being struck by a comebacker, but he's ready for his next turn through the rotation. Olson has enjoyed a nice start to the campaign with a 2.16 ERA over 50 innings, but he's been particularly effective across his past five starts with just three earned runs allowed.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Bullpen session pushed to Thursday

Olson (hip) is slated to throw a bullpen session Thursday and is on track to make his scheduled start this weekend against the Blue Jays, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. The Tigers initially said Olson would throw off a mound Wednesday, but he'll end up having his bullpen session pushed back a day. Olson exited his start in the third inning Monday against the Royals after being struck on the right hip by a comebacker. Detroit fully expects the righty to be ready for his start this weekend, but he'll need to get through Thursday's mound session before he's locked in for his next turn through the rotation.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Throwing off mound Wednesday

Olson (hip) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Olson had to make an early exit from his start Monday against the Royals after taking a comebacker off his right hip. The right-hander managed to escape the incident with nothing more than a bruise, but the Tigers will have him throw a bullpen session to make sure Olson will be able to make his next scheduled start Saturday against Toronto.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Nursing bruised hip

Olson has been diagnosed with a bruised right hip after being struck by a comebacker during Monday's start against Kansas City. Olson appears to have escaped with a minor injury, though the team will closely monitor him over the next few days. His next start tentatively lines up for Saturday against the Blue Jays, and the club should have clarity on his upcoming availability later in the week. Olson noted after the game that he expects to be fine, and he was already moving around better, per Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Leaves start early

Olson exited Monday's start against the Royals after being struck by a line drive on his right hip, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. He surrendered two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings before departing. Olson was forced to leave the game after being hit by a comebacker that registered at 102 mph off the bat, though he did attempt to fire a few warmup pitches before the training staff walked him off the field, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Beau Brieske entered the game to replace Olson in the bottom of the third inning.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Stellar against Marlins

Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday despite allowing just three hits over eight scoreless innings. He struck out six. While Olson was spectacular Tuesday, he was matched on the other side by Ryan Weathers, who also delivered eight scoreless frames in an eventual 1-0 Marlins win in 10 innings. Olson has held opponents to one run or fewer in five of his last six starts, including four straight. His ERA is down to 2.09 on the year with a 0.99 WHIP and 41:15 K:BB across 47.1 innings. Still, Olson's been incredibly unlucky to open his sophomore campaign, as he's yet to earn a win through eight starts. He'll look for more support in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week in Kansas City.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Solid again vs. Cleveland

Olson did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Guardians, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. It was another excellent outing from Olson, though he was ultimately stuck with the no-decision despite allowing just one hit, as the Tigers' bullpen couldn't protect a 4-2 lead. Olson is 0-4 on the year despite holding opponents to one earned run or fewer in five of his seven starts. He lowered his ERA to 2.52 with a 1.12 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB across 39.1 innings. Olson will look for better luck in his next turn in the rotation, currently scheduled for early next week against Miami.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Pitches well in no-decision

Olson tossed five scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision in Friday's game against the Yankees. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five. Olson was sharp against a strong New York lineup, but the Tigers couldn't provide enough run support in the eventual 2-1 loss. Olson has been dialed in over his last four starts, compiling a 1.54 ERA and striking out 25 batters across 23.1 innings, but he has an 0-3 record to show for it. The strong run has at least lowered his season ERA to a tidy 2.70. The righty will look to keep pitching well and hopefully get a bit more run support in his next appearance, which is tentatively set for Wednesday against the Guardians.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Takes loss, falls to 0-3

Olson (0-3) was charged with four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks over five innings in a losing effort against the Twins on Saturday. He struck out four. Olson fanned two in a scoreless first inning, but the Twins then got to him for runs in the second, third and fifth frames. Only two of the runs were earned, and Olson continues to show flashes with his changeup and breaking pitches, but his fastball has been too hittable and the results remain inconsistent. The 24-year-old will take a 3.80 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB over 21.1 innings into his next start, projected for next weekend at home against the Royals.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Takes tough-luck loss Monday

Olson (0-2) allowed just one run on six hits across 6.1 innings but took the loss Monday against the Rangers. He walked one and struck out eight. Olson was sharp but Michael Lorenzen and three Texas relievers were better, blanking the Tigers for a 1-0 victory. For Olson, it was at least a step in the right direction after allowing six runs over 4.1 innings in his last start. Outside of that rough outing, the righty has allowed just one earned run across 12 innings this season, giving him a solid 3.86 ERA overall. He had a 3.99 ERA over 103.2 innings as a rookie last year, so he may be able to sustain his current form. Olson will look to carry some momentum into his next scheduled start, which is penciled in for Saturday against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Struggles in loss

Olson (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out three. After opening the season with 5.2 shutout innings against the Mets, Olson looked significantly less sharp Monday against the Pirates, allowing a career-high nine hits. Most disappointingly, the 24-year-old tallied only three strikeouts for his second straight outing, well below his 8.9 K/9 in 103.2 innings last year. Olson is slated to make his next start at home against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Secures rotation spot

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced Friday that Olson will be a member of the club's season-opening rotation, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Olson posted a 4.12 ERA over 107 innings as a rookie last season and cemented his rotation spot during spring training with a 3.68 ERA and 14:4 K:BB in 14.2 frames. Tarik Skubal, Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty are set to start in the three-game, season-opening series against the White Sox, lining up Olson to pitch April 1 or 2 versus the Mets.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Pitches better Tuesday

Olson tossed three scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. He allowed two hits and struck out four. Olson pitched well against an Atlanta lineup that featured a few of the team's regulars. The young righty came into the contest having allowed four runs across his first 3.2 innings this spring. Olson is locked into a battle for one of Detroit's final rotation spots, with Matt Manning and Alex Faedo presumably in the mix as well.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Narrowly misses quality start

Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against Kansas City. He struck out seven. The 24-year-old allowed just one unearned run, courtesy of his own throwing error, through the first five frames Tuesday. He surrendered his only earned run on back-to-back hits to start the sixth, and despite punching out the next two batters, Olson was lifted after 5.2 innings and 92 pitches, much to the dismay of fantasy managers in leagues that reward quality starts. After surrendering six earned runs to the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has held opponents to fewer than three tallies in six consecutive outings, posting a 1.51 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB across 35.2 innings. During that same stretch, the right-handed rookie has lowered his season-long ERA from 5.29 to 3.99, considerably increasing his fantasy draft stock for the 2024 campaign.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Possible waiver wire pickups

Normally, a rookie pitcher would see his performance slip and his outings shorten as the season draws to a close, but Reese Olson seems to have saved his best for last. After making it six innings in only three of his first 16 outings, he has now done so in four straight, allowing just two hits in each of his last three. While earlier in the year, he was mostly looking to overpower hitters with his slider -- a pitch that generates its share of whiffs, to be sure -- he's taken to throwing his changeup more lately and is having more success on balls in play as a result. Whether it's a tweak that can sustain him for the long haul remains to be seen, but we're not so interested in the long haul right now. We're interested in his matchups next week against the Royals and Guardians, which couldn't be more favorable and couldn't be coming at a better time.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Quality start ends in defeat

Olson (3-7) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out five. Olson was locked in a 0-0 pitcher's duel with White Sox starter Mike Clevinger through six innings but blinked in the seventh when a two-out, two-run homer by Yoan Moncada chased him from the game. After struggling to the tune of a 5.29 ERA over his first 68 big-league innings, Olson has begun to put things together with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts spanning 18 innings. He'll look to continue this momentum in his next start, currently scheduled for a home matchup against the Reds.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Seven scoreless in win

Olson improved to 3-6 Saturday, allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 10-0 victory over the White Sox. He struck out one and didn't issue any walks. Olson needed just 79 pitches to cruise through seven innings unscathed Saturday, scattering just four singles in a blowout victory. Detroit handed him a 4-0 lead before he took the hill, and the 24-year-old clearly pitched to contact, as he managed only one strikeout in the outing. In the rookie's two starts following his rough outing against the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has allowed just one run and posted a 0.97 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings. He is currently slated for a rematch with the White Sox at the end of the upcoming week.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Strikes out 10 but takes loss

Olson (2-6) allowed one run on three hits across 4.1 innings and took the loss Monday against the Yankees. He walked four and struck out 10. It was a mixed bag for Olson, who needed 100 pitches to retire only 13 batters. However, the rookie also recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and limited New York to just the one run, which kept the Tigers in the game until the bullpen faltered. Despite not completing five innings, it was a step in the right direction for Olson after allowing 10 runs over his last two starts (7.1 innings). The righty will look to keep this up and go a bit deeper in the contest during his next outing, which is currently penciled in for Saturday against the White Sox.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Gives up four runs in six innings

Olson did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings against the Marlins. He struck out two and did not record a walk. Olson made his third straight start following the All-Star break and completed at least six innings for the first time this season. However, the right-hander continues to struggle with the long ball, having now allowed four over his past three starts and eight across 11 total appearances. Olson has been able to eat up innings at the big-league level, but overall, his results have been subpar and his role remains in flux.
