A.J. Foyt IV crashes during Indy 500 practice

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -A.J. Foyt IV's car caught fire and crashed hard against the wall Sunday during practice for the Indianapolis 500. He had a slight burn to the back of his neck but was otherwise unhurt.

The grandson of four-time Indy winner A.J. Foyt qualified for the May 25 race Sunday, but during a later practice session his fuel tank cover came off and the spraying fuel was ignited from the heat of the engine. With flames shooting from the rear of the car, he spun hard into the wall going into the third turn.

Foyt was taken to the infield hospital for a routine examination and later released and cleared to drive. Speedway medical officials said he also had some singed hair.

Meanwhile, Phil Giebler was released from Methodist Hospital but not cleared to drive because of a cervical sprain from a crash during practice on Saturday. His team decided Sunday not to make a last-minute effort to get another driver into the race.
