Condition of ALMS crewman upgraded to fair after pit fire mishap

INDIANAPOLIS -- An injured American Le Mans Series crewman was upgraded to fair condition at an Indianapolis burn center as he recovers from burns he suffered in pit fire.

De Ferran Motorsports said Thursday that fueler Keith Jones is continuing to make good progress after he was critically burned during a race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last month. It was just the second event for the Brownsburg, Ind.-based team headed by former Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran.

De Ferran won the pole and started the race, but teammate Simon Pagenaud was at the wheel when the team's car pulled away from the pit with the fuel hose still attached, igniting the fire.

Safety workers quickly put out the fire, but Jones, wearing a helmet and fire-retardant clothing, was briefly caught in the flames.
