Don't you just love these mock drafts? The problem is, they all change, by the minute, by the hour and by the day. They seem easy to predict right up until the week heading into the big day. Then, a great little phenomenon takes over. The great George Young called it "paralysis by over-analysis." Too much information, too much time to think and way too much time for GMs to change their minds.

That said, the following is my mock draft as of April 18. Unfortunately, within the next 24 to 36 hours, this will surely change. The problem is you have smoke screens, then some truth but drowned in more smoke, then a crack of truth, then, well, way too much information both true and untrue.

Here's a stab at the NFL Draft's first round:

Mock Draft
TeamPlayerPositionSchool
1. Houston Texans David Carr QBFresno State
I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Carr. I know it's a stretch, but sometimes you just need to take a blind stab at this thing.
2. Carolina PanthersJulius Peppers DE North Carolina
Peppers has a chance to make an impact on nearly every defensive play, whereas CB Quentin Jammer is involved predominantly against the pass. Coach John Fox is not married to this slot and would love an offer to drop down a few spots.
3. Detroit Lions Quentin JammerQB Texas
The Lions are waiting to see what Fox does before making a decision. If Jammer isn't there, they try to drop down a few slots. If he is, Lions top dog Matt Millen takes the best man for one of their biggest needs.
4. Buffalo Bills Mike Williams OT Texas
Too athletic of a big man to pass up here, especially since they know they need to protect Drew Bledsoe, who they should have a deal done for in the next 24 hours. They'll also have to consider Tennessee DT Albert Haynesworth.
5. San Diego Chargers Bryant McKinnie T Miami
Needs help to protect QB of future Drew Brees and RB of present and future LaDainian Tomlinson. Bolts brought Williams in last week to double check some lingering questions, but if he's off the board, they have to go with McKinnie.
6. Dallas Cowboys Roy Williams SOklahoma
Scouts say he's Ronnie Lott but two steps faster. "He takes over games when you need him to," said one NFC scouting director. "You can use him to cover, he's a terror against the run, use him as a nickel linebacker. He gives you so much with his versatility." Would love their next Deion hopeful in Jammer and have spoken briefly with Lions about a move up. If he's gone, some top personnel men believe they could try to trade down to grab either Miami's Phillip Buchanon or, try this for a shock, Miami TE Jeremy Shockey.
7. Minnesota Vikings Ryan Sims DT North Carolina
Offensive line coach-turned-head man Mike Tice is hoping that Miami's McKinnie drops. If he doesn't, he'll have to grab the draft's most complete DT to pair with Chris Hovan and former Miami Dolphins DEs Lorenzo Bromell and Kenny Mixon.
8. Kansas City Chiefs Albert Haynesworth DT Tennessee
Talk of Joey Harrington is not a smoke screen, but they never thought Haynesworth would still be on the board. Coach Dick Vermeil wants a guy who can make an impact this season, while the front office must concern themselves with the big picture. Trent Green has one year remaining on his deal, and the Chiefs had to pare down their offense a few times for him last year. Will take Sims instead if he's available.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars John Henderson DT Tennessee
Tom Coughlin wants to trade down. The Redskins, who called the Chiefs this week about a move up, might be their best hope.
10. Cincinnati Bengals Joey Harrington QB Oregon
The best available Oregon Ducks QB. Much better on-field presence than the last Duck they got, Akili Smith.
11. Indianapolis Colts Wendell Bryant DT Wisconsin
Need desperate help up front, and Bryant could be the answer.
12. Arizona Cardinals Philip Buchanon CB Miami
If all four DTs are gone, Arizona tries to trade out. If not, it'll be between Phillip Buchanon and WR Donte Stallworth, who they have very highly rated. But they need defense first and foremost.
13. New Orleans Saints Donte Stallworth WR Tennessee
Despite the signing of Jerome Pathon, they can't pass up a true 4.2 guy. They also like Buchanon because of his return skills.
14. Tennessee Titans Ashley Lelie WR Hawaii
This pick is by elimination only. They are praying for one of the draft's top defensive players, but they are a pick or two too late. They would go with Lelie because they need a player who they believe can be a Pro Bowl player at No. 14, regardless of position.
15. New York Giants Jeremy Shockey TE Miami
Their biggest problem on offense a year ago was Lomas Brown at left tackle, which is why they should seriously consider Levi Jones. However, they have Shockey rated in their top five.
16. Cleveland Browns T.J. Duckett RB Michigan State
Too solid to pass up with the off-field question marks of William Green. Will also consider Levi Jones.
17. Atlanta Falcons Dwight Freeney DE Syracuse
Many teams say he is not suited to play OLB in a 3-4. They insist he's a 4-3 DE, but the Falcons think he would work well within their new 3-4 scheme. Will also consider a receiver such as FSU's Javon Walker and Lelie if he is available.
18. Washington Redskins Patrick Ramsey QB Tulane
Daniel Snyder has called teams such as the Chiefs to move up for Joey Harrington. If they can't do it, they'll try to drop back and grab Ramsey.
19. Denver Broncos Levi Jones T Arizona State
Approximately 71 percent of starting left tackles in the NFL were first-round picks.
20. Seattle Seahawks Daniel Graham TE Colorado
Was very impressive at the Senior Bowl, where he was coached by Seattle's Mike Holmgren.
21. Oakland Raiders William Green RB Boston College
Al Davis can book his running back of the future and grab a draft pick that actually makes sense.
22. N.Y. JetsLito Sheppard CBFlorida
The Jets like Sheppard and Miami CB Mike Rumph. They also would strongly consider UAB DT Eddie Freeman.
23. Oakland RaidersEddie Freeman DTAlabama-Birmingham
Need help at DT, and Freeman is the best of the available bunch.
24. Baltimore Ravens Napoleon HarrisLB Northwestern
Covet Levi Jones and would jump all over him if he somehow dropped here. They'd love to move down if Jones is not on the board.
25. New Orleans Saints (from Miami) LeCharles Bentley C-G Florida
Saints love this kid and would probably play him at guard for a year while he learns the line calls from center Jerry Fontenot. Georgia DE Charles Grant would also be a strong consideration.
26. Philadelphia Eagles Kalimba Edwards DE South Carolina
Oakland needs an outside pass rusher. Gee, just what the NFC East wanted Hugh Douglas to get as an offseason gift -- a pass rush from the opposite side.
27. San Francisco 49ers Mike Rumph CB Miami
You can never have too many good corners, especially when you play St. Louis twice a year.
28. Green Bay Packers Anthony Weaver DT Notre Dame
They need help in the middle. Will also consider safety Ed Reed, who can step in when LeRoy Butler's time is up (which could come this summer).
29. Chicago Bears Bryan Thomas DE Alabama-Birmingham
His stock has been flying up the board in past two weeks. His time in the 10 yards is as fast as some DBs. Great explosion off the line.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers Ed Reed S Miami
Pure ball-hawk. Not a run support guy, but who needs with a front seven like the Steelers have?
31. St. Louis RamsJabar Gaffney WRFlorida
Another receiver will make the rest of the league cringe..
32. New England PatriotsAndre Gurode OGColorado
New England has phoned teams like the Ravens to move up a bit and should have additional ammo if they pull the Bledsoe trade.
