Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin set to fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas
The superfight is set to go down this September in Nevada, Oscar De La Hoya announced on Monday
Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are set to slug it out in one of the most famous cities for boxing in the world: Las Vegas. Golden Boy founder Oscar De La Hoya announced on Monday that the two fighters will clash on Sept. 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, beating out other choices like New York City and Dallas, Texas.
"Everybody wanted this fight," De La Hoya said. "Everybody wants to go to Vegas, have a great time, it's going to be a train wreck, let me tell you.
"I did receive a crazy amount of money, the offers were just amazing from Madison Square Garden. I was contemplating it. … Obviously my good friend Jerry Jones wanted this fight. I talked to my great friend Magic Johnson who wanted to stage the fight at Dodger Stadium."
De La Hoya noted that the entertainment factor of Las Vegas was the decisive component, making fight week more of a party. This will be Golovkin's first fight in Las Vegas while it will be Canelo's third fight at the venue that opened in 2016. The two are set to fight for Golovkin's unified WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles.
