Vegas prosecutors seek death penalty in Wells case

LAS VEGAS -- Prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty against a man who pleaded not guilty to shooting a former Olympic boxer to death in Las Vegas last August.

A judge set trial in September for Randolph after he appeared in court Tuesday.

Randolph, 26, remains held without bail at the Clark County jail.

Prosecutors allege Randolph shot Rhoshii Wells twice with a high-powered rifle Aug. 11 after an argument at an apartment complex.

Prosecutor David Stanton says a third wild shot zipped through a nearby apartment, risking harm to others.

Randolph called the shooting self-defense. He says Wells punched him and robbed him of $100.

Wells, 31, was a father of five who won a bronze medal for the United States as a middleweight at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
