Alex Poythress: 'Why not aim at 40-0? We might as well try to do it'
Sophomore forward Alex Poythress spoke about the possibility of Kentucky going 40-0 this season.
Despite losing five players off last season’s NIT team, Kentucky is likely to enter the season as the No. 1 team in the country. The Wildcats bring in arguably the best recruiting class of all time – and the talent on the roster is second to none.
Needless to say, the expectations in Lexington are very high.
Returning forward Alex Poythress isn’t running from the hype, either, as the above video shows.
“If we put our mind to it, once everybody gels, I say we can do anything. The sky is the limit for this team, so why not aim at 40-0? We might as well try to do it, right?
“Why not? What’s stopping us? The only thing stopping us is us this year, so we might as well try to do it.”
Is that goal realistic? Let’s take a look.
While Kentucky has a ton of talent, it’s mostly young and inexperienced talent – so it’s hard to gauge in the preseason how everything will work out. In 2012, it ended with a national championship. Last season, it ended in the NIT. This season looks much more like the title-winning team.
As for the schedule, Kentucky faces Michigan State in Chicago, Providence in Brooklyn, Baylor in Texas, North Carolina in Chapel Hill – and Boise State and Louisville at home. Not to mention the SEC slate, which has two games against top-10 Florida and one game against top-25 Tennessee.
Oh, and the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
It’s a lofty goal, and there are obviously stumbling blocks – but at least Poythress and the Wildcats are aiming high.
