CBSSports.com Player of the Week: UMass senior Chaz Williams
UMass senior Chaz Williams finished with 32 points and 15 assists in Saturday's win over BYU.
There are more than 12,000 Division I college basketball games played each season and more than 120,000 played every decade, which I hope highlights the greatness of the weekend Chaz Williams just enjoyed.
The UMass point guard finished with 32 points and 15 assists in a win over BYU.
No player had produced those numbers in more than 10 years.
"Chaz Williams ... attacks and gets wherever he wants," BYU's Tyler Haws told reporters after the up-and-down affair. "He was kind of doing it all for them."
Yes, he was.
Consequently, Williams is the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week despite the fact that his other game in the week was mostly forgettable. The 5-foot-9 senior finished with 12 points and eight assists in last Tuesday night's win over Eastern Michigan. So Williams ended up averaging 22.0 points and 11.5 assists in two victories that pushed the Minutemen to an 8-0 record and a No. 21 ranking in the latest Top 25 (and one).
This represents UMass' longest winning streak since 1998.
It's the best start to a season for the Minutemen since the 1995-96 season.
