Creighton's Doug McDermott passes Larry Bird on all-time D-I scoring list
The best player in Creighton history continues to climb up the ranks in college basketball lore.
Creighton star senior Doug McDermott just accomplished something even he never thought possible.
In Creighton's home game on Sunday evening against No. 6 Villanova, McDermott passed Indiana State legend Larry Bird on the all-time scoring list in men's Division I basketball history.
McDermott is now 13th all-time, currently sitting at 2,863 points; Bird finished his college career with 2,850. He did it in three seasons -- and without a 3-point line. McDermott finished with 39, tying a season-high. He was 13 for 17 from the field and 9 for 9 from the line, in addition to snagging seven boards.
McDermott passed Bird by coming off a high ball screen on the left wing and sinking a 3-pointer from a few feet beyond the college arc with 13:21 remaining. The shot gave Creighton a 64-47 advantage. The Bluejays went on to win 101-80.

Creighton fans stood and applauded after the basket, of course.
Regarding usurping Bird, McDermott on TV afterward said the following: "That means a lot. Imagine if he had a 3-point line and he had four years: he'd be way ahead of me. ... It's really cool. I'm going to embrace it, but there's a lot of season left."
Humble kid who is going to run away with all of the player of the year awards.
McDermott's chase to college basketball lore has been one of the special storylines this season. I chronicled McDermott's story and his pursuit recently here on the site.
The 18th-ranked Bluejays should rise in the polls on Monday.
