DePaul, Northwestern agree to five-year series
If you share city limits with another major-conference school, you should be playing each other every year. Simple as that.
The two biggest men's D-I college hoops teams in the greater Chicago area have agreed to the rational: a long-standing intra-city series.
DePaul and Northwestern, which have combined for four NCAA Tournament appearances in the past 25 years (all going to DePaul), will play each other once per season for five consecutive years, starting in 2015-16.
The schools jointly announced the series Monday morning.
An interesting twist: DePaul gets three home games and Northwestern gets two.
"The teams were originally scheduled to play a contest during the 2014-15 season but were unable to come together on a date that worked for both schools," per Northwestern's release.
The team's have met 30 times, splitting 7-7 in the 14 games since 1987.
"As a Chicago native, I think it's terrific for basketball in the area to have Northwestern and DePaul play one another," second-year Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said via statement. "There have been some great games between the teams over the years and we look forward to that continuing."
Northwestern went 14-19 in its first season under Collins.
"Getting the DePaul-Northwestern series secured over this five-year stretch is great for both programs and basketball fans in Chicago," DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell said. "Last year's exciting finish was an example of the great competition we'll see between the two teams."
Purnell has been at DePaul for four years and owns a 42-77 record. Specific dates for the games going forward will be announced at a later time.
