Fresno State transfer Kevin Olekaibe hopes to walk on at UNLV
Kevin Olekaibe left Fresno State in April to be closer to his family, and is now enrolled at UNLV. Will the NCAA grant him a waiver?
When Katin Reinhardt announced a couple of weeks ago he was leaving UNLV, it was a noteworthy hit for the Runnin’ Rebels backcourt.
Now, according to the Las Vegas Sun, they might have found his replacement.
Kevin Olekaibe has enrolled in summer school classes at UNLV, and is hoping to get an NCAA waiver to play immediately in the fall. Olekaibe left Fresno State in April after his father was transferred to a Las Vegas hospice.
From the Sun:
His father is paralyzed from the waist down and unable to speak – the result of two strokes.
“I don’t remember the last words he said to me,” Olekaibe said. “His left side is unresponsive. He doesn’t speak. He always told me family comes first, so coming home was an easy decision.”
The Las Vegas native plans to walk on at UNLV, and told the newspaper he would still stay in the city if the NCAA denies his waiver.
Olekaibe, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 17.8 points two seasons ago, before seeing his numbers dip as a junior. He only averaged 8.3 points last season, but still managed to total 34 points and eight assists in two games against UNLV.
