High-scoring soph Dewayne Russell leaves Northern Arizona
Jack Murphy and Northern Arizona lost their leading returning scorer on Wednesday, as guard Dewayne Russell left the team.
Jack Murphy had some success in his first season at Northern Arizona, winning eight games in the Big Sky and even reaching the conference tournament. With three starters back, the Lumberjacks could rise higher this season
But Murphy will now have to do it without his leading returning scorer.
Sophomore guard Dewayne Russell has left the program, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com. Russell will look to transfer elsewhere.
Russell, a 5-foot-11 in-state product, averaged 14.4 points and 3.2 assists as a freshman last season. He was one of the best scorers in the Big Sky Conference, and was expected to be even better this season. He had six games of at least 20 points a year ago.
Northern Arizona opens its season on Saturday against Texas-San Antonio.
