Injuries beginning to pile up for California
California has been hit hard by the injury bug so far this season, and that continued on Sunday.
Every season, there’s a team on Selection Sunday that is tough to project given their various injuries throughout the season. This season, that team looks to be California.
Earlier this season, the Golden Bears lost two games at the Maui Invitational with Richard Solomon out. On Sunday, Cal lost on the road at Creighton – although injuries marred that defeat, as well.
Before the game, the school announced that guard Ricky Kreklow would miss the next four to six weeks with a right hand injury.
Kreklow, a 6-foot-6 former Missouri transfer, started five games this season. He averaged 6.4 points and 2.6 rebounds, while shooting nearly 39 percent from 3-point range.
During Sunday’s game, though, the news got worse.
Freshman guard Jabari Bird suffered a sprained ankle, and will be evaluated when the Golden Bears return home, according to a source. Bird, a smooth 6-foot-6 scorer, was averaging 11.3 points and 3.2 rebounds, shooting 40 percent from behind the arc.
Meanwhile, Solomon seemed to be limping and favoring his left leg during Sunday’s game, but sources indicated that the 6-foot-10 senior is fine and should be ready to play against Furman on Sunday.
California is 8-4 on the season.
