July Recruiting Preview: Best events of the month
We're just one day away from a three-week sprint filled with red-eye flights and quick car rides in the summer heat.
Wednesday marks the beginning of the July live recruiting period, a three-week stretch where coaches from colleges across the country will follow and evaluate potential prospects from coast-to-coast. From Las Vegas and Augusta to Chicago and Louisville, thousands of high school basketball players will take part in a long list of events – and coaches will watch every second of it.
It can get a little confusing, so we're here to prepare you.
Since the calendar shifted from two 10-day periods to three five-day periods, the number of events each session has made it even more difficult for coaches to get from place to place. Many coaches can only spend a day at each event in order to see the most players possible. Here is a look at some of the biggest events this month.
For a complete listing of events, here is a more comprehensive breakdown.
LeBron James Skills Academy (Las Vegas): Vegas has become the epicenter of basketball in July, with NBA Summer League, AAU, USA Basketball – and the premier summer camp. Eighty of the best high school ballers and 30 college players will participate.
Adidas Unrivaled (Chicago): Nike has its skills camp in Vegas, while Adidas counters with a skills camp in Chicago. One hundred high school prospects will be in attendance.
Reebok Breakout Classic and The Showdown (Philadelphia): The Breakout Classic is always a great camp environment to watch most of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic’s best players – along with a collection of some big-time national talent as well. The Showdown is an AAU tournament that follows the Breakout Classic.
Nike Peach Jam (North Augusta, S.C.): The biggest AAU tournament on the circuit, the Peach Jam is a culmination of the Nike EYBL circuit. The top 24 teams from four events during the spring match up to determine a winner. If you’re going to pick one event, pick this one.
The UAA Finals (Suwanee, Ga.): Under Armour comes gunning for Nike with its own signature AAU tournament in the South. Wednesday night and Thursday will feature showcase games, before getting into bracket play. Plenty of high-level talent will be on display.
NY2LA Summer Jam (Mequon, Wisc.): With Under Armour and Nike teams filling up the South, a shoe company-neutral event takes place in the Midwest – although plenty of Adidas teams will be in attendance. Lots of good regional talent as well.
LAS VEGAS: If you enjoy grassroots basketball and driving from small high school gym to small high school gym, you’re going to love the third live period in Las Vegas. There are at least four events going on, with Adidas’ signature team event going on – as well as three other ones worth noting.
LOUISVILLE: The AAU Super Showcase and Nationals moved from Orlando to Louisville for this summer, and making Kentucky the new primary alternative to Las Vegas. Both are AAU team tournaments that overlap, but there is always plenty of action going on, with hundreds of teams.
