Kansas junior Naadir Tharpe will be suspended for the Jayhawks’ season-opener on Nov. 8, head coach Bill Self announced after Tuesday’s exhibition win over Pitt State.

Tharpe is serving the suspension because he played in an unauthorized summer league game while visiting teammate Jamari Traylor in Chicago. Student-athletes can only play in pro-am games in their hometown or in their college city.

“That’s the penalty for playing in a game he knew he shouldn’t have been playing in, but didn’t use good judgment,” Self said. “So it’s a one-for-one deal, and that’s the situation.”

“So we self-reported that because he didn’t get prior approval, which he would not have gotten because it wasn’t in his area,” Self added. “It’s a game for a game.”

Tharpe was expected to be Kansas’ starting point guard this season, but freshman Frank Mason will get the nod in the next exhibition game and the opener against Louisiana-Monroe.
