Michigan guard Caris LeVert returns to action after ankle injury
Michigan needs its potential All-American guard healthy if it is to make another March run.
Much is expected of Michigan guard Caris LeVert this season, with some even calling him the next All-American out of Ann Arbor -- following in the footsteps of Trey Burke and Nik Stauskas.
But the 6-foot-6 wing underwent surgery on his ankle in May and had missed more than three months recovering.
As the Wolverines head to Italy for a preseason trip, LeVert is back -- but not 100 percent just yet.
"Caris started playing last week, but he's not himself yet," head coach John Beilein said in a Wednesday press conference. "As you can imagine, he was pretty much dormant for 16 weeks and so you'll see some of those flashes today. It's just a matter of him getting back in game shape."
With Stauskas, Glenn Robinson III and Mitch McGary all gone to the NBA, LeVert will become the go-to-guy for Michigan this season. He was one of the most improved players in the country during the 2013-14 campaign, seeing his numbers skyrocket across the board. LeVert averaged 12.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists -- while shooting nearly 41 percent from 3-point range. He struggled a bit in the NCAA Tournament, though, averaging 9.3 points on 43 percent shooting.
Michigan is short on options inside, but the trio of LeVert and sophomores Derrick Walton and Zak Irvin will make the Wolverines formidable on the perimeter.
They open the season on Nov. 17 against Bucknell.
