NCAA suspends Baylor coach Kim Mulkey for one tournament game
The NCAA doesn't normally go this far with its punishment of coaches, but Baylor women's coach Kim Mulkey was vocal after her team's upset loss in the Sweet 16.
The NCAA continued Tuesday with its public reprimands dating back to behavior from last season.
Baylor women's coach Kim Mulkey is the most recent target and, in an unordinary action, the NCAA has suspended Mulkey for one game, an NCAA tournament game, the next time the Lady Bears make the women's tournament. Carolayne Henry, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee, called the decision to sit Mulkey for one game "unanimous."
The punishment stems from comments that Mulkey made in the post-game media session after Baylor lost in the Sweet 16 to Louisville on March 31. The No. 1-seeded Bears were felled by the Cardinals, an upset, certainly. Afterward, Mulkey was quick to cut the officials down to size on what she felt were unfair calls.
Mulkey has been a frequent critic of NCAA referees.
"The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee noted this is the latest misconduct act by Mulkey during the past several championships and believes a more stringent penalty is appropriate to prevent these actions from continuing," the NCAA said in a press release. "She also received a public reprimand for comments to the media following the 2011 championship. Mulkey’s misconduct led the committee to issue her a one-game NCAA postseason championship suspension as well as the withholding of Baylor’s team championship per diem during the regional round of play."
The penalty carries over whether Mulkey coaches at Baylor or if, for some reason, her next NCAA tournament appearance comes at a different school.
Last week, the NCAA publicly reprimanded -- but doled out no suspensions -- to Kansas men's coach Bill Self and Ole Miss star guard Marshall Henderson for unwarranted behavior during the 2013 tournament.
