NCAA suspends Illinois assistant for two NCAA tournament games
It's rare to see a coach get suspended for the big tournament for his actions, but it's the case here.
It's not often we see the NCAA punish coaches by way of suspensions for NCAA tournament games, but that's exactly what happened Friday.
Illinois assistant coach Jamall Walker received both a public reprimand and a two-game NCAA tournament suspension due to his "misconduct" in the 2013 NCAA tournament.
"Specifically, Walker made inappropriate contact with a game official and verbally confronted the game officials and a police officer following Illinois’ loss to Miami (Fla.) on March 24 in the third round of the East Region," according to the NCAA.
This suspension is applicable for whenever Walker is coaching a team that next makes the NCAA tournament. If Illinois is playing in it in 2014, he'll sit out then. If he is part of a staff that doesn't make the NCAAs until, say, 2020, he'll face the suspension then. And if the team he is part of it one-and-done in the NCAA tournament, he'll still have to serve that second game, whenever it should come.
“Coach Walker’s behavior violated the expectations that championship participants act in a manner that represents the highest standards of sportsmanship,” Ron Wellman, chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and athletic director at Wake Forest, said. “The nature of his actions led us to issue the two-game postseason suspension.”
In its first season under head coach John Groce, Illinois was a No. 7 seed in the 2013 tournament and defeated No. 10 Colorado before falling 63-59 to Miami in a controversial outcome.
