Podcast: A conversation about a Sweet 16 that won’t include Villanova or Duke
The No. 1 overall seed (Villanova) and the betting favorite (Duke) are both gone
The NCAA Tournament has been cut from 68 teams to 16. Villanova is no longer involved. Duke is no longer involved. Matt Norlander and I discussed basically everything that happened over the weekend, and everything on tap, on this episode of the Eye on College Basketball Podcast.
Among the topics:
- John Calipari’s upcoming return to Memphis
- How HB2 contributed to Duke’s demise
- Wisconsin’s not-that-surprising upset of Villanova
- Chris Collins’ costly technical foul
- Virginia’s embarrassing loss to Florida
We looked ahead to some Sweet 16 matchups -- most notably South Carolina vs. Baylor on Friday at Madison Square Garden. It’s Devan Downey’s alma mater vs. Terry Teagle’s alma mater. It’s basically the Eye on College Basketball Podcast Invitational. I could not be more excited.
And did you see the gaming commentator shoutout Devan Downey?
We closed the podcast by discussing the still-spinning coaching carousel. We got into Brad Underwood’s move from Oklahoma State to Illinois, Mike Hopkins’ move from Syracuse to Washington -- and Syracuse’s decision to, unsurprisingly, extend Jim Boeheim’s contract beyond the 2017-18 season.
