Report: NCAA eyeing connection between UNC's Hairston, agent
North Carolina's athletic director acknowledged on Friday school officials have communicated with the NCAA about Rodney Blackstock, an NBA agent who allegedly paid money to try to gain influence over former Kansas star Ben McLemore.
North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham acknowledged to the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer on Friday that school officials have communicated with the NCAA about Rodney Blackstock, an NBA agent best known for being the man who allegedly paid money to try to gain influence over former Kansas star Ben McLemore.
Blackstock allegedly has a connection to UNC shooting guard P.J. Hairston.
Both Blackstock and Hairston are from Greensboro, N.C.
TheBigLead.com reported earlier Friday details of Hairston's relationship with Blackstock and added that the NCAA wants to speak with Hairston's mother, Wendy Mailey, about Blackstock. This all comes less than three weeks after Hairston was arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession after being stopped at a license checkpoint. Police subsequently acknowledged that a gun was discovered outside of the rented 2013 GMC Yukon that Hairston was driving at the time. It remains unclear why Hairston was driving a rented SUV and who rented it. A source told CBSSports.com the NCAA would like to know if Blackstock is connected to that rental.
Hairston, a 6-foot-5 junior, averaged a team-best 14.6 points per game this season. UNC coach Roy Williams said this week that he's "waiting until all the information comes out" before deciding whether to discipline or even dismiss Hairston from the program.
"We're going to wait and see what happens," Williams told USA Today. "I've got some ideas, but right now those ideas are staying in my mind. ... I am waiting until all the facts come in, and then I will take care of everything that needs to be taken care of."
