Report: Texas Tech to hire Tubby Smith, but school denies report

Tubby Smith will be the next head coach at Texas Tech, according to a report from the Associated Press. But a Texas Tech official denied the report Monday afternoon.

"Texas Tech has NOT reached an agreement with Tubby Smith to be next hoops coach," tweeted Texas Tech spokesperson Blayne Beal. "Current reports are inaccurate."

Smith, 61, was fired at Minnesota last Monday after six seasons. He made three NCAA tournaments in that span but never finished better than sixth in the Big Ten. That combined with Smith's age makes this a questionable move on Texas Tech's part because if a man can't finish better than sixth in the Big Ten at Minnesota what's the best-case scenario for him coaching Texas Tech in the Big 12?

Either way, this would be Smith's fifth head coaching position. The High Point graduate previously worked at Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky before leaving Lexington in 2007. He was named the Naismith National Coach of the Year in 2003.
