Reports: Butler, Creighton to join new Big East

Big news is breaking regarding -- and breaking, literally -- three conferences.

The Indianapolis Star is reporting Butler will defect from the Atlantic 10 and join the refurbished Big East via a formal announcement next week.

An announcement is expected next week. The goal is to get a new conference done before the second round of the NCAA Tournament begins on Thursday.

The Omaha World-Herald is reporting Creighton will end its relationship with the Missouri Valley and mirror Butler's move.

This would put the rebranded Big East at nine teams, with Xavier heavily rumored to be the 10th. The Catholic 7 of Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall, Marquette, DePaul, Providence and St. John's officially came to an agreement to break away from the Big East -- and take the conference name and tournament rights at Madison Square Garden with it.

More from the World-Herald:

Other media sources, including the Chicago Tribune, also were reporting that Creighton's entry into the 10-team league was imminent. The Tribune reported that Creighton will join the league for the 2013-14 school year, the move becoming official by Wednesday or Thursday.

Creighton officials on Friday continued the school's policy of declining to comment on any conference move, making what seemed to be carefully worded statements.

“I have no information to share,'' said Athletic Director Bruce Rasmussen.

“We have no information to share,'' said Kim Manning, a spokeswoman for the Rev. Timothy Lannon, CU president.

Numerous members of Creighton's board of trustees also declined to comment or did not return calls.

The Missouri Valley is currently boasting the longest continual membership of its schools of any league in college basketball except for the prestigious Ivy League.

As for Butler, this was a move first speculated, then reported on, a few weeks ago. All we were waiting for is the official word. Which still hasn't come, but should next week, just in time for NCAA tournament play. It seems conference realignment is dovetailing and stealing headlines from the best time of the year in college hoops.
