Reports: Washington to name new basketball coach
Washington made a big surprise hire for Lorenzo Romar's replacement, according to reports.
It didn’t take long for Washington to find its replacement for fired coach Lorenzo Romar, according to Jon Rothstein with CBS Sports.
BREAKING: Washington will hire Syracuse's Mike Hopkins as its next basketball coach, per multiple sources. Announcement expected today.— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) March 19, 2017
It’s an interesting hire in that Hopkins was named Syracuse’s “head coach-designate” for when Jim Boeheim retires.
Hopkins played for Boeheim at Syracuse from 1989-93, and has been an assistant at the school since 1996, earning a reputation as an excellent developer of guard talent and a strong recruiter, who landed players like Gerry McNamara and Billy Edelin for the Orange.
He’ll have to show off his chops in the latter area almost immediately, as Washington attempts to try and hold onto the No. 1 player in the 247Sports Composite in signee Michael Porter Jr.
