Rick Pitino to coach against Richard Pitino in 2014 Armed Forces Classic
Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals will play Richard Pitino's Minnesota Golden Gophers in a father-son matchup that should bring additional attention to the 2014 Armed Forces Classic.
The date of the game is Nov. 14.
It'll be played at the United States Air Station Borinquen in Puerto Rico.
Rick Pitino, of course, is the 61-year-old father of Richard Pitino, the 31-year-old who is in his first season at Minnesota. The elder Pitino has said he'd never schedule a home-and-home with Minnesota, meaning the only way the two would ever coach against each other again -- they met last season when Richard was at FIU -- is in a tournament or made-for-TV event.
The Armed Forces Classic is a made-for-TV event.
So it's a perfect scenario and a big stage.
ESPN will televise the game.
In a related development, ESPN has announced that the 2015 Armed Forces Classic will be held at an undetermined United States Marine base, and that the 2016 Armed Forces Classic will be a doubleheader at the Naval base in Pearl Harbor, HI -- just under a month from the 75th anniversary of the attack. Teams for those games haven't yet been determined.
