Rutgers transfer Eli Carter cleared to play immediately at Florida
Eli Carter can play right away for Florida this season, after transferring from Rutgers in the spring.
Rutgers transfer Eli Carter has been cleared to play immediately at Florida, sources informed CBSSports.com.
He is the fourth former Rutgers player to be granted immediate eligibility for the 2013-14 season, along with Derrick Randall (Pittsburgh), Mike Poole (Iona) and Vincent Garrett (Wisconsin-Green Bay).
Carter, a 6-foot-2 guard from New Jersey who played at Brewster Academy (N.H.), received his release from the Scarlet Knights after Mike Rice was fired in April. Maryland was the other finalist for his services, although several other schools were also in the mix.
He averaged 14.9 points and 2.1 assists last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury against DePaul in mid-February. Carter eclipsed the 20-point plateau on eight occasions, and also dropped 31 on Florida back in the 2011-12 season.
Sources told CBSSports.com that Carter has not been medically cleared yet, but he is expected to be healthy for the season.
The Gators, who are likely to open the season ranked in the top 10, has a deep and talented backcourt, but Carter will certainly find minutes. He has the ability to play both guard positions, and will provide scoring punch off the bench or as the third guard in a small lineup. Returning starter Scottie Wilbekin was suspended indefinitely in June, but incoming freshman Kasey Hill is an elite prospect at the point guard position. Michael Frazier has good range from the perimeter.
Florida opens the season Nov. 8 against North Florida, before heading to Wisconsin on Nov. 12.
