Source: Ben Howland's future still officially undetermined at UCLA
UCLA coach Ben Howland, as of Saturday night, still hadn't heard from or met with athletic director Dan Guerrero, a source told CBSSports.com. Consequently, there is nothing new to update about his job status with the Pac-12 school, though it seems likely at this point that Howland will not return for an 11th season.
UCLA coach Ben Howland, as of Saturday night, still hadn't heard from or met with athletic director Dan Guerrero, a source told CBSSports.com. Consequently, there is nothing new or concrete to report about his job status with the Pac-12 school, though sources have said it seems likely that Howland will not return for an 11th season.
An official announcement could come this week.
But nothing is official yet.
UCLA released a statement late Saturday refuting reports of Howland's termination.
"Contrary to multiple media reports this evening," the statement read, "UCLA has not fired men’s basketball coach Ben Howland,"
Howland's 10th year at UCLA ended Friday with an 83-63 loss to Minnesota in the Round of 64. It was a disappointing finish to a season that was otherwise good. The Bruins were the outright Pac-12 champions and considered by most as a threat to advance in the Field of 68 before Jordan Adams, the team's second-leading scorer, broke his foot in the Pac-12 semifinals. Still, UCLA won 25 games despite losing two transfers midseason and starting four first-year Bruins for much of the season.
By normal standards, that's success.
But UCLA doesn't have normal standards.
So the school is likely to move a man who made seven of the past nine NCAA tournaments, including three consecutive trips to the Final Four from 2006 to 2008. It was reported last week that only a deep run could possibly save Howland's job. Obviously, that didn't happen. So now everybody is just waiting -- Howland for a definitive statement one way or another, other coaches to see if they can maybe be the guy to replace him.
