St. John's hires St. Louis associate head coach Jim Whitesell

St. John’s has moved quickly to fill the vacant spot on its coaching staff, as the school announced on Monday that Saint Louis associate head coach Jim Whitesell is making the move to the Red Storm.

“Jim Whitesell’s numerous coaching stops and 24 years of head coaching experiences at the highest levels of collegiate competition is a nice complement to our specialized staff,” head coach Steve Lavin said. “Coach Whitesell joining our basketball family gives our staff more than 110 years of combined coaching experience. We are pleased to have Jim on board as a Johnnie.”

Whitesell is filling the void left by Moe Hicks, who announced last week that he was leaving his position as director of basketball operations to return to coaching.

Whitesell will join the St. John’s staff as an assistant coach, forcing assistant coach Darrick Martin to the DOBO position. Tony Chiles and Rico Hines will remain as assistant coaches.

“I am very excited about joining the St. John’s basketball family,” Whitesell said. “SJU has such a fantastic basketball tradition. The opportunity to work with Steve Lavin and his staff is incredible as Steve is building a very special program at SJU. I am looking forward to being part of it and helping in any way possible.”

Coming to Queens with the reputation as a good X’s and O’s coach, Whitesell has been at Saint Louis for two seasons. He was promoted to associate head coach after one season. Prior to joining the Billikens staff, Whitesell was the head coach at Loyola Chicago for seven seasons.
