Syracuse announces Georgetown game will set new attendance record

What constitutes a "sellout" in a dome that will still have almost half its seats empty? The number 35,012, apparently. That's how many tickets Syracuse has sold for its Saturday game against Georgetown, which is a twinbill of this sort: It will be the last Big East regular-season game at Syracuse between Georgetown and the Orange, arguably a top-five rivalry in college hoops; and for the occasion, Syracuse is retiring Carmelo Anthony's jersey number at halftime.

Good synergy there, what with it being a decade since SU's only national title back in '03.

The school has capped off printing off any more ducats; if you've been to the Carrier Dome for a basketball game, you know how far into the football field/behind the curtain those seats can get. It basically requires binoculars. The 35,012 is a new NCAA on-campus attendance record.
"The February 23 contest will mark mark the 72nd time the Dome has welcomed a crowd greater than 30,000 for a Syracuse basketball game," according to a school release. "Georgetown has been the opponent on 17 of those occasions (including this year's). The fan total of 35,012 surpasses the mark of 34,616 set on February 27, 2010 when the Orange hosted Villanova. The Villanova game was also announced as a sellout in advance, the only other time that has been done for a Syracuse men's basketball game."

Saturday's game begins at 4 p.m. and will be on CBS.
