Syracuse will be without James Southerland due to an academic issues, sources told CBSSports.com.
The school released a statement just before the team's game against Villanova on Saturday saying Southerland will not participate in competition until further notice due to an eligibility matter.
A year ago, the Orange took a significant hit when starting center Fab Melo was ultimately dismissed from the team for an academic issue. Now it's Jim Boeheim's top perimeter shooter whose eligibility is in question.
The 6-foot-8 senior is averaging 13.6 points per game and is shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc. His absence, which is indefinitely at this time, will make an impact on a team that will now rely on redshirt freshman Trevor Cooney to make shots from deep.
Southerland has struggled with his 3-point shot recently, going 1 of 8 against Providence, but has also displayed the ability to get going from deep. He was 9 of 13 from beyond the arc in a win over Arkansas.
CBSSports.com was told by a source that there's still uncertainty regarding how long Southerland will remain suspended -- or even whether he'll return to the team.
