The Poll Attacks: Is OU getting two of OSU's points in the coaches poll?
Oklahoma is getting votes in the coaches poll. It sounds like some coach forgot to write "State" after "Oklahoma" on his ballot. Either way, let's do the Poll Attacks.
Associated Press poll: We didn't rank Notre Dame in our Top 25 (and one), but we could've. The Irish are a solid 9-1. But the resume is still highlighted by little more than a home win over a Kentucky team that's no longer ranked, and it features a loss to a Saint Joseph's team that's 5-3 with a loss to a Villanova team that's lost to Alabama, Columbia, La Salle and Temple, and that's not a resume that should be ranked 11th.
Still, that's where Randy Rosetta ranked Notre Dame.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune writer has the Irish 11th -- one spot behind an Illinois team that has a better win (at Gonzaga) and zero losses (the Illini are 12-0). So, again, that seems high. And, either way, what's up with Randy ranking Marquette 18th? That's higher than any other voter has the Golden Eagles, and a little high for a team whose 7-2 record features a best win over Wisconsin, an 82-49 loss at Florida and a neutral-court loss to Butler. Meantime, Randy has Butler ranked 19th. Because it makes perfect sense to rank Butler behind Marquette even though Butler has a better record (8-2), a better win (over Indiana) and a neutral-court victory over Marquette.
Coaches poll: Nobody likes Lon Kruger more than I like Lon Kruger. He's a terrific coach and a gentleman. But I don't understand how his Oklahoma Sooners can be getting two points in the coaches poll considering they were picked seventh in the preseason Big 12 poll and are now 7-2 with zero wins against the Top 25. OU's best victory is over a West Virginia team that's 4-5. OU's two losses are a 72-47 loss to Gonzaga and an 81-78 loss to an Arkansas team that's 5-4.
How is that worthy of Top 25 votes?
Answer: It's not.
Which is why I bet those two points were intended for Oklahoma State but awarded to Oklahoma because some coach forgot to write "State." That's the only explanation.
