UCLA freshman TJ Leaf injured his ankle against Washington on Wednesday night in the first half. He did not return to action after exiting to the locker room. Here is the play, in which he came down awkwardly on his ankle, that sidelined him:

According to the Los Angeles Times, Leaf suffered a sprained left ankle. UCLA head coach Steve Alford seemed confident it was a minor sprain, and won’t keep him out too long.

“He’ll be on crutches, boot, trying to get that thing rest and a lot of treatment,” Alford said, via the Los Angeles Times. “It was just a sprained ankle, so it’s not a bad one, but we’ll have to see what the next 48 hours look like.” Alford also noted that doctors ruled out any broken bones for Leaf.

Averaging 16.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists, Leaf has emerged as one of the most important weapons in UCLA’s high-flying offense. His scoring as a 6-foot-10 power forward helps keep opposing defenses honest, and with his 46.2 percent shooting from the 3-point line this season, a case can be made that his presence on the floor alone is part of what makes the Bruins such a lethal offense that has been nearly unstoppable this season.
