UMass adds Western Kentucky star transfer Derrick Gordon
Western Kentucky guard Derrick Gordon told CBSSports that he is transferring to UMass. This is a huge get for Derek Kellogg and the Minutemen.
UMass is adding one of the nation's top transfers in Western Kentucky guard Derrick Gordon.
Gordon averaged 11.8. points and 6.7 rebounds this past season and decided to leave the Hilltoppers following a coaching change. He wanted to get close to his home in New Jersey and visited UMass, St. Joe's and Rhode Island.
"My relationship with Coach (Derek) Kellogg was huge," Gordon said. "He's so down to earth and I felt like I could talk to him about more than just basketball."
"It was a hard decision for me, but I went with my heart," he added. "I think it's a terrific fit for me and I think we have a chance to be very good. They play the perfect style for me -- run and gun, pressing and a lot of pick and rolls."
This is a big addition for UMass coach Derek Kellogg, whose Minutemen advanced to the NIT this past season and return everyone of note except for big man Sean Carter.
The 6-foot-2 Gordon will sit out next season and have three remaining -- where he'll likely see time at both backcourt spots.
Gordon helped lead Western Kentucky to an NCAA tournament appearance this past season -- and had 12 points in the Hilltoppers loss to Kentucky in the second round.
