UNLV makes late pickup with available prospect Jamal Aytes

UNLV filled its final remaining scholarship on Monday, when unsigned prospect Jamal Aytes announced on his Twitter account that he was heading to the Runnin’ Rebels.

Aytes, a 6-foot-6 forward from J Serra Catholic (Calif.) played with Dream Vision AAU over the summer and was one of the best available players left in the class of 2013. BYU, Boston College, Gonzaga, Miami, Kansas State, Northwestern and West Virginia were also in the mix for Aytes over the past couple of months.

While he might be undersized, Aytes can score in traffic around the rim and has a strong body to get position on the block. He also has some ability to face-up and knock down mid-range jumpers. We watched him go against shot-blocking extraordinaire Goodluck Okonoboh this summer, and Aytes was able to consistently finish against the 2014 big man.

Aytes will take the scholarship vacated when Katin Reinhardt decided to transfer to USC back in the spring. He will provide depth in the post behind Roscie Smith and Khem Birch. Senior Carlos Lopez-Sosa will also fight for minutes off the bench, along with incoming freshman Christian Wood and redshirt freshman Demetris Morant
