Updated Top 25 (and one)
Villanova's dramatic win over Kansas late Friday launched the Wildcats into the top 10 of the updated Top 25 (and one).
I was asked early Friday if a win over Kansas would get Villanova into the updated Top 25 (and one). My answer was simple: "Yeah, 6-0 with a win over Kansas would get Villanova in."
Then Villanova went out and beat Kansas.
So now the Wildcats are eighth in these rankings.
To be clear, I'm not trying to tell you I think Villanova will end the season as a top-10 team, and I'm not even sure Villanova is a top-10 team now. But 6-0 with a neutral-court win over Kansas is a top-10 resume now, meaning it's more than reasonable to place the Wildcats where I've placed them. They deserve it until they prove they don't.
The other big mover here is Mike Krzyzewki's Duke Blue Devils.
I dropped them from No. 4 to No. 13.
Why, you ask?
For starters, it's not just because they lost to Arizona on Friday because that would be dumb. It's partly that but also because Kansas lost to Villanova, meaning Duke is suddenly a team with a 6-2 record featuring no good wins and losses to Arizona and a Kansas team that now has a loss to Villanova. In other words, Duke's resume got worse Friday based on what happened in New York and in the Bahamas. Combine that with the fact that the Blue Devils struggled with Vermont earlier in the week and are ranked 28th at KenPom.com, and an adjustment was needed, I think. So I made that adjustment.
Before I go, one last thing.
I've been getting a lot of questions from Iowa fans about what the Hawkeyes must do to break into the Top 25 (and one), and there's a simple answer to that question -- beat Villanova on Saturday night in the title game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Do that, and I'll treat Iowa the same way I treated Villanova. Because then the Hawkeyes would be 8-0 with a win over the Villanova team that beat the Kansas team that beat Duke, and that resume would be worthy of recognition here and everywhere else.
The Top 25 (and one) updates every morning and also on Sunday nights.
