Updated Top 25 (and one)
Arizona is the new No. 1 in the Top 25 (and one) after Michigan State's home loss to North Carolina.
When I agreed to update the Top 25 (and one) every single day of this season, rest assured, I didn't properly anticipate nights like these -- you know, nights on which a top-ranked team would lose a home game to an unranked team that had previously lost to schools from both the Ohio Valley Conference and Conference USA.
Turns out, stuff like that complicates the rankings.
Turns out, stuff like that makes things a little messier than I like.
So how to handle top-ranked Michigan State's loss to North Carolina?
Honestly, there's no obviously right or wrong way to handle it. But here's what I did: I moved Arizona from No. 2 to No. 1, meaning Sean Miller's Wildcats are the new No. 1. (Congrats!) Then I moved the six schools immediately behind Arizona -- specifically Kentucky, Ohio State, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Villanova and Kansas -- up one spot each and dropped Michigan State in behind them, at No. 8, one place ahead of No. 9 Memphis.
And North Carolina?
I mean, I don't have the slightest idea what to do with a team that can beat Louisville and Michigan State but lose to Belmont and UAB in a span of 18 days. I picked No. 17 because that's the spot Virginia vacated after Wednesday's low-scoring home loss to Wisconsin. But UNC could be 10 spots higher than that or five spots lower than that in somebody else's rankings, and you wouldn't get a complaint from me. I've never seen a team this confusing. The Tar Heels are challenging my attempt to remain sane while doing this.
The Top 25 (and one) updates every morning and also on Sunday nights.
