VIDEO: SMU reveals its new court design, new Moody Coliseum
Yes, another new floor in college basketball. This makes for more than a dozen this offseason.
Something told me we'd get one more new-court announcement before we got to the weekend. And here it is. Unlike most schools, SMU opted to announce its remade maple by releasing video.
Moody Coliseum underwent a $47 million renovation, according to the school, and it is nearly complete. The floor design has been approved, and on Friday SMU made the news official. This also came in coordination with SMU's complete men's basketball schedule reveal. SMU will be part of the new American Athletic Conference in 2013-14.
My favorite part of SMU's release, on the process of picking a court design: "From the classic to the outlandish, greenlight studied all basketball courts in order to gain a holistic viewpoint around current court design. Following the research phase, greenlight began the design process with a goal of maintaining SMU's heritage and tradition while embracing the multi-million dollar renovation of Moody."
Those bold red and blue colors will dominate the redone Coliseum.
The design will debut on Jan. 4, 2013, when SMU begins league play against UConn at 1 p.m. SMU said Moody Coliseum will be fully refurbished and completed in December.
