Virginia forward Akil Mitchell breaks hand, out 4-6 weeks
Wednesday brought two pieces of bad news for Virginia. Akil Mitchell will miss the next four-to-six weeks with a broken hand, while Taylor Barnette is transferring.
Virginia forward Akil Mitchell broke his hand at the LeBron James Skills Academy this week, head coach Tony Bennett confirmed in a news conference on Wednesday.
Bennett said Mitchell's recovery would take between four and six weeks.
"It's below the finger in that part of the hand," Bennett said, according to Whitelaw Reid of the Daily Progress.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-8 senior from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 13.1 points and 8.9 rebounds last season. Although he is expected to return in plenty of time for the start of the season, the Cavaliers also have Anthony Gill and Mike Tobey in the post in case the recovery takes longer than anticipated. A healthy Mitchell gives Bennett one of the best post groups in the league.
In general, Wednesday wasn't a great day for Virginia basketball. In addition to Mitchell's injury, the school announced Taylor Barnette was leaving the team and transferring. Barnette, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 2.6 points as a freshman.
