WATCH: Georges Niang campaigns to be the new 'Mayor' of Ames, Iowa

Fred Hoiberg will always be The Mayor of Ames, but Niang could be his running mate. (via Des Moines Register)

Georges Niang really did become one of the true success stories of college basketball over the past four years. He was originally a tubby kid from Massachusetts who couldn't earn scholarship offers to any of the major D-I programs in the northeast.

He eventually landed at Iowa State, and this past season, put up All American-type numbers, finishing off one heck of a career with the Cyclones. He's become one of the most beloved players in the history of that program. In recognition of this, the Des Moines Register posted an enjoyable little video of Niang in his denouement from college life.

Could Niang actually overtake Fred Hoiberg? The former Iowa State star and recent coach of the Cyclones, is forever known as "The Mayor of Ames."

Maybe Niang could challenge that?

Nice of Niang to play along. Hoiberg is royalty forever in that town, but Niang can become nearly as beloved. And he's got the affability and humor, too. College hoops will miss him.
