19 victims reach settlements with Penn State
Lawyers for the claimants say that 19 of their clients have settled with Penn State as a result of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. The specific amounts weren't disclosed.
At least 19 young men have reached settlements with Penn State as fallout from the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, lawyers for the plaintiffs told the Associated Press.
Many of the men have recently received checks from the school, but the lawyers weren’t allowed to disclose specific details regarding payouts. Penn State allotted $60 million to settle the cases.
“They’re getting the resources they need to navigate hurdles which have been thrown in front of them,” Pennsylvania lawyer Ben Andreozzi told the AP. “Does it wipe out all of their problems? No. Does it give them the resources they need to get their lives back on track? Yes.”
Numerous other Pennsylvania lawyers confirmed to the AP that their clients had settled as well, including one lawyer who said his client received a check from the school two weeks ago. A few cases still remain unsettled, though.
Penn State has said it will eventually reveal details regarding how many claimants were involved and how much money the school paid out. Lawyers from Penn State say at least 31 have come forward, but not all may have legal representation.
Sandusky, Joe Paterno’s longtime assistant, is serving 30 to 60 years in prison for the sexual abuse of young boys over a 15-year span.
