ACC Coastal Division race: Duke just one win from ACC title game
Duke needs a victory at North Carolina next week to clinch a spot in the ACC Championship Game. Virginia Tech, Miami and Georgia Tech are next in the standings.
Duke clinched a share of the ACC Coastal Divison title with its 28-21 win at Wake Forest on Saturday, securing the school's first 9-win season since 1941. The victory also eliminated a fair chunk of the 32 possible Coastal Division title scenarios. With one week left to play in the regular season, there are five teams that can earn a share of the division title and four that can earn a spot in the ACC Championship Game against Florida State.
Duke (9-2, 5-2 ACC)
Week 14: at UNC
Title Needs: The easiest path to Charlotte; win and the Blue Devils are in the ACC title game.
Virginia Tech (7-4, 4-3 ACC)
Week 14: at Virginia
Title Needs: Mostly, the Hokies need UNC to beat Duke. That, plus a Miami win against Pittsburgh forces a five-way tie with Georgia Tech, Duke, UNC and Miami at 5-3. If Pittsburgh beats Miami, there is a four-way tie for the Coastal Division title. Virginia Tech wins both of those tiebreaker scenarios thanks to its head-to-head record against the tied teams.
Miami (8-3, 4-3 ACC)
Week 14: at Pittsburgh
Title Needs: Miami needs a win at Pitt, a Duke loss at UNC and a Virginia Tech loss to Virginia in order to force a four-way tie Duke, Georgia Tech, and UNC at 5-3. The Hurricanes have a 2-1 record against those tied opponents, giving them a program-first appearance in the ACC Championship Game and rematch against Florida State.
Georgia Tech (7-4, 5-3 ACC)
Week 14: vs. Georgia
Title Needs: Georgia Tech's ACC schedule is done, but there is still a way for the Yellow Jackets to return to the ACC title game for the second-straight season. Paul Johnson's team needs arguably the most help of the bunch; requiring Virginia Tech, Miami and Duke losses to force a three-way tie at 5-3 with the Blue Devils and UNC.
North Carolina (6-5, 4-3 ACC)
Week 14: vs. Duke
Title Needs: North Carolina can force a three-team, four-team, or five-team tie for the ACC Coastal Division title with a victory against Duke. Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, losses to Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Miami earlier this season would prevent a trip to the ACC Championship Game.
