ACC Poll Reactions, Week 1
The newest AP Poll and USA TODAY Coaches Poll have been released. Here's how the ACC stacked up in the college football rankings.
This week's polls have been released. Here's how the ACC fared, from the top of the polls to the bottom, and what it means.
6/6. Florida State
No shock seeing the Seminoles with a slight bump in the polls after putting a 69-3 hurting on Murray State. Unfortunately, the big shock came Monday night with the news that defensive end Brandon Jenkins is done for the year with a foot injury. Still, it says something about the depth on the defensive line that most experts still expect to see Florida State Seminoles fighting for an ACC title near the end of the season. Stadium operators in Tallahassee should keep the scoreboard warm, with Savannah State coming to town on Saturday - the same Savannah State that gave up 84 to Oklahoma Sooners State in Week 1.
12/12. Clemson Tigers
The Tigers had arguably the most to gain of any team in the ACC this past weekend, and the defending ACC champs rose to the occasion with a hard-fought 26-19 win against Auburn Tigers in the Georgia Bulldogs Dome. The win broke a four game winless streak for the ACC in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic, and showed that Clemson - particularly the defense - has moved on past the 70-33 Orange Bowl loss to West Virginia. No Sammy Watkins ? No problem. As long as Andre Ellington and Nuke Hopkins are healthy, Tajh Boyd has plenty of talented targets on offense.
15/18. Virginia Tech Hokies
The Hokies offense struggled to find a rhythm against Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the season opener on Monday night, but the stout Bud Foster defense and just enough plays from Logan Thomas helped the team escape with a 20-17 overtime win. The front seven, anchored by sophomore defensive tackles Luther Maddy and Derrick Hopkins , flew to the stuffed the middle of the field and flew to the perimeter to make plays against Paul Johnson's flex bone option attack. Thomas and the offense should get more opportunities to work out the kinks this week against Austin Peay.
Other receiving votes: AP voters moved North Carolina Tar Heels were impressed by Fedora's fast-break offense, and moved the Tar Heels closer to the Top 25 after their 62-0 rout of Elon. Georgia Tech continues to collect some votes after falling to the Hokies in overtime, and Virginia received seven points in the Coaches poll.
