Auburn AD: Raise coming for Gus Malzahn after 2013 season
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said that the school will address Gus Malzahn's contract after the 2013 season.
With an 11-1 record, Iron Bowl victory and an appearance in the SEC Championship Game; it is fair to say Gus Malzahn has exceeded expectations in his first year as Auburn's head football coach.
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said this week that the success will result in some adjustments to Malzahn's contract.
"The Auburn people, me and the president and the leadership, we’re going to do what’s necessary to make sure that he’s reasonably situated in the SEC in coaches’ salaries," Jacobs told the Montgomery Advertiser.
According to USA Today's annual list of coaching salaries, Malzahn ranks just outside the Top 10 of SEC coaches with an annual compensation of $2.44 million. Coaching compensation differs from school-to-school -- it is difficult to accurately pinpoint one number with different approaches to apparel deals, and other compensation -- but the school could quickly boost Malzahn's standing among his peers in the SEC. Those discussions, according to Jacobs, are coming at the end of the season.
"We’re going to address both of those as soon as the year’s over," Jacobs said. "Gus doesn’t want to have anything to do with that right now. We’ve decided that when the season’s over; all he’s worried about is Saturday."
Aside from the assumed raise, Malzahn already has some extra cash coming his way for Auburn's success in 2013. He will reportedly earn $100,000 for 11 wins and $25,000 more for each additional victory. Getting to the SEC Championship Game puts $100,000 in Malzahn's pocket and he can earn $50,000 more if Auburn defeats Missouri on Saturday.
Malzahn could also receive bonuses for a Top 5 finish in the final AP poll and national coach of the year honors. He was named a Maxwell Coach of the Year finalists on Tuesday, along with Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and Duke coach David Cutcliffe.
