Bob Stoops receives contract extension from Oklahoma
Oklahoma extended Bob Stoops' contract through the 2020 season.
Bob Stoops will begin his fifteenth season as the head coach of Oklahoma next month, and it appears he's going to be sticking around for quite a few more.
Oklahoma announced Thursday that it had signed Stoops through an extension that will keep him with the Sooners until 2020.
"We took this action to express the University's deep appreciation for Bob Stoops' work," said Oklahoma president David L. Boren. "In my opinion, he ranks among the very best nationally in the way he combines his ability as a coach with high ethical standards. I greatly value and enjoy my association with Bob and feel extremely fortunate that at the University of Oklahoma we have the longest continuous tenure of the current head football coach, athletics director and president."
As you'd expect, Stoops was happy with the news.
"I appreciate the University's commitment to our program and me," Stoops said. "Most coaches dream of working in the kind of situation that exists at Oklahoma, especially with leaders like President Boren and Joe Castiglione. We're proud of what we have accomplished to this point and look forward to achieving a lot more."
At the moment Stoops is the third-longest tenured coach in Oklahoma history, behind only Bud Wilkinson (17 seasons) and Barry Switzer (16 seasons). Should he complete his current contract Stoops will reach the 22 season mark with the Sooners.
During his first 14 seasons Stoops has compiled a record of 149-37 with eight Big 12 titles and a national championship in 2000. The Sooners have also gone 81-5 at home under Stoops in that time.
