Breaking down Alabama, FSU and 2016's top 10 recruiting classes
A breakdown of how the top 10 classes of the 2016 recruiting period fared on National Signing Day.
2015 National Signing Day is in the books, and with the dust settled, here's how the 247Sports Composite team rankings top 10 shook out:
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 3/14/7
Top recruit: ILB Ben Davis, No. 1 ILB, No. 10 overall
Signing Day storyline: The Tide had a good signing day, which is nothing new. What was already an excellent class added more top-of-the-line players on Signing Day with five-star linebackers Ben Davis and Mack Wilson, as well as four-star cornerback Shyheim Carter. Those additions helped Alabama climb the rankings to finish with 247Sports' top class for the sixth straight year.
2. Florida State
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 1/17/7
Top recruit: CB Levonta Taylor, No. 1 CB, No. 7 overall
Signing Day storyline: The Seminoles had an excellent class entering National Signing Day, but the additions of four-star linebacker Dontavious Jackson, four-star running back Amir Rasul, and four-star offensive lineman Jauan Williams, but it was Williams who really stood out. Not just because he's a really good player, but because he weighs over 303 pounds and can do this.
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 2/16/6
Top recruit: CB Kristian Fulton, No. 2 CB, No. 21 overall
Signing Day storyline: It would seem strange to portray a Signing Day that ended with the third-ranked class in the country as a disappointment, but it kind of felt like one for LSU. After all, the Tigers began the day as the No. 1 overall class, and were hoping to add a few more blue chips to the fold on Wednesday. Instead the biggest story involving LSU was its offensive coordinator having to deny reports he was on the way out the door.
4. Ohio State
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 1/17/7
Top recruit: SDE Nick Bosa, No. 1 SDE, No. 8 overall
Signing Day storyline: It was quiet and easy in Columbus on Wednesday, which is exactly what Urban Meyer and company expected. The heavy hitters of this class had been committed to the Buckeyes for a while, and they weren't expecting any surprises on Wednesday. They didn't get any, either.
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 1/14/14
Top recruit: DT Rashan Gary, No. 1 DT, No. 1 overall
Signing Day storyline: It's always nice to land the top recruit in the country on Signing Day, which is exactly what happened for Michigan when Rashan Gary chose the Wolverines over Clemson. Of course, that was just part of the festivities in Ann Arbor on Wednesday. And, if we're being honest, as great a day as it was for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan, the highlight has to be The Nature Boy, right?
6. Ole Miss
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 3/12/9
Top recruit: OT Gregory Little, No. 1 OT, No. 3 overall
Signing Day storyline: Ole Miss has become one of the Signing Day regulars under Hugh Freeze, and once again the Rebels put together an excellent class. The biggest commitment of the day came from four-star safety Deontay Anderson, who jumped out of a dang plane to announce his decision.
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 3/10/7
Top recruit: QB Jacob Eason, No. 2 QB, No. 5 Overall
Signing Day storyline: Kirby Smart didn't have a lot of time to put the finishing touches on Georgia's 2016 class, but you can't say he didn't make the most of it. On Signing Day the Bulldogs were able to add five-star safety Mecole Hardman Jr. as well as four-star DL Michail Carter and his big ass bulldog.
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 2/12/6
Top recruit: WDE Oluwole Betiku, No. 1 WDE, No. 16 overall
Signing Day storyline: USC closed well, bringing in a few more recruits on Signing Day to finish the class, but they did so quietly. While other schools were busy crowing about all their signings via social media, or with their coaches doing television, USC was noticeably absent from all the hoopla. You have to think it was a conscious decision by Clay Helton to handle things this way, and as long as he keeps bringing in top 10 classes, I doubt anybody at USC will mind. Plus, why toot your own horn when you have Snoop Dogg willing to be your hype man?
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 1/11/9
Top recruit: DT Derrick Brown, No. 4 DT, No. 9 overall
Signing Day storyline: As is typically the case, Auburn found itself in Alabama's shadow a bit on Signing Day, but that doesn't mean the Tigers weren't closing strong. The biggest addition was obviously five-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown -- the top-ranked recruit in the state of Georgia -- choosing the Tigers over the Dawgs. A very nice cherry on the top of a top 10 class Sunday.
Signees by stars (5/4/3): 1/12/7
Top recruit: DT Dexter Lawrence, No. 2 DT, No. 2 overall
Signing Day storyline: Obviously Clemson's day would have been better had Rashan Gary chosen the Tigers, but the good news for Dabo Swinney is he already had the No. 2 recruit in the country locked up in Dexter Lawrence. Plus he picked up four-star cornerback Trayvon Mullen, who could help offset the loss of Mackensie Alexander. This was the kind of class that will help ensure Clemson continues to hang with Florida State as the two kings of the ACC.
