Breaking Down the Buzz: Boston College
Can Boston College return to a bowl game in 2014?
Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the Eye on College Football examines what current hot topic the fans of one BCS team are obsessing over -- rationally or not. Today's team: the Boston College Eagles .
What they're talking about...Boston College's way early betting lines. Over at BC Interruption, SB Nation's Boston College site, the familiar chatter is ongoing regarding the way-too-early betting lines for the Eagles' 2014 schedule. Earlier this month, BCI's Dan Rubin weighed in with his thoughts on the few games listed and added some thoughts on the off-the-board contests.
"BC almost always plays Virginia Tech tough because the Hokies are turning into the new Clemson (definition - a team that'll win one big game and then inexplicably choke at a various point of the season and subsequently unravel)," Rubin writes. "A nine-point spread in June is all but asking for even money against Pittsburgh, which at this point is really a pick 'em game until we learn more about both teams."
What they're saying is...the Pitt line is too large and one fan thinks UMass could pull the upset. As is the case with topics like this in June, the hottest sports takes can be found in the comment section.
-- Pitt 9 points better on the road after losing their best player and QB?
-- PITT -9? I would bet BC now huge.
--Oh yeah I think BC will not only cover, but win against PITT
-- UMass wins this game comfortably you heard it here first. FROM A BOSTON COLLEGE FAN
-- DUDE YOU ARE SO STUPID NO WAY THAT HAPPENS BOSTON COLLEGE WILL STEAMROLL THE MINUTEWOMEN. GO EAGLES WE ARE NOT ONLY THE BIRD OF THE UNITED STATES BUT OF BENFICA THE PORTUGUESE SOCCER GIANT.
-- RawDog, I would not be surprised at all if UMass pulls a stunning upset over BC. My guess is that it will be a 21-17 game with BC winning, but it could go the other way as well. BC just isn’t going to be good this year. UMass certainly doesn’t have the recruits that BC has, but they’re going to be real hungry for a win and BCs going to be overconfident and unprepared in their special team game.
What we think is...BC has an uphill battle to return to a bowl in 2014. It is far, far too early to take many of these lines too seriously, especially since there are so many unanswered questions about Boston College going into the fall. Steve Addazio has brought an infectious tough-guy attitude to the program with his "Be A Dude" campaign, but the success story of 2013 likely does not happen without a full season of health from 2,000-yard rusher Andre Williams.
Williams and quarterback Chase Rettig, a three-year starter, are gone, so the offense will turn to new "Dudes" -- likely a ground attack with Florida transfer quarterback Tyler Murphy and Myles Willis, a sophomore running back who was the Eagles' best return man in 2013 -- and hope to avoid a slide after a five-win turnaround (from 2-10 to 7-6) in Addazio's first season.
With a late-season slate that includes Virginia Tech, Louisville and Florida State, Boston College must steal wins on the road (at NC State and/or at Wake Forest) and avoid an embarrassing home loss to have a fighting chance at 6 or 7 wins in November.
