CBSSports.com Players of the Week (Nov. 18)
Boston College RB Andre Williams, North Carolina DE Kareem Martin, Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert, Auburn WR Ricardo Louis and Ohio State DL Joey Bosa earned CBSSports.com Player of the Week honors.
Every Monday, we will highlight the best and brightest performances from the weekend with the CBSSports.com Players of the Week. The honors will run through the end of the regular season right up until the CBS Sports All-America Team announcement on Dec. 17.
Williams carried the ball 42 times for 339 yards and two touchdowns in Boston College's 38-21 win. The senior from Schnecksville, Pa. now has three of the top ten rushing performances in FBS play this season, with Saturday's performance overtaking Jordan Lynch for the top spot. Williams broke Mike Cloud's single-season school record and Thomas Jones' single-season ACC record; and with two games remaining on the schedule there should be enough snaps left to pad that lead in the record books.
Williams needs just 190 yards to reach the 2,000-yard mark on the season, a feat that has not been accomplished in FBS play since UConn running back Donald Brown did so in 2008. His 634 rushing yards in back-to-back games is second only to former Texas running back Ricky Williams; who totaled 668 yards in back-to-back games in 1998.
North Carolina's turnaround from 1-5 has been a credit to some improved play on the defense, and the Tar Heels' defensive leader stood out in a game that featured two of the best defensive lineman in the ACC, and possibly the country. Pitt defensive tackle Aaron Donald is on his way to All-American honors, but it was Martin's eight tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery that stood out as North Carolina held on for a 34-27 win against the Panthers.
Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert is also deserving of this honor for his contribution to the Cowboys' 38-13 win at Texas. Gilbert had two interceptions, nine tackles, one pass break-up and a 41-yard kickoff return in the victory, but it was his 43-yard pick-six in the second quarter that turned the tide in the game and set up a winner-takes-the-Big-12 game against Baylor in Stillwater on Saturday.
This might be a bit of a stretch, but Ricardo Louis absolutely deserves a nod this week for securing the tipped pass on 4th and 18 and taking it to the house for a 73-yard game-winning touchdown against Georgia. In addition to the Immaculate Deflection (which you can relive in video and GIF form HERE), Louis played on the punt and kickoff coverage teams that held Georgia to zero return yards. On offense, Louis finished with 131 receiving yards on four receptions and 66 rushing yards on five carries.
The Buckeyes' high school All-American from St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has wasted no time cracking the rotation in Columbus, and Saturday's win against Illinois featured one of Bosa's most impactful performance of the season. Bosa recorded three sacks for a total loss of 21 yards, doing most of his damage in the second quarter as Ohio State cruised to a 35-14 halftime lead and eventual 60-35 victory against the Illini. The Buckeyes defense, particularly the defensive line, has been very impressive over the last couple weeks, and Ohio State fans are hoping Bosa falls into the program's long line of dominant defensive linemen.
