Louisville made it clear early in coaching's silly season that they would do whatever it takes to keep Charlie Strong as the Cardinals' football coach. As Louisville reportedly is working on an extension to keep Charlie Strong as its football coach, CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman reports that the coach is "going back and forth" between staying with the Cardinals or accepting an offer from Tennessee.
As of Tuesday night, Tennessee's search to replace Derek Dooley had reportedly come down to Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Louisville's Charlie Strong and North Carolina's Larry Fedora.
Bruce Feldman reported Wednesday morning that Mike Gundy received an offer from the Volunteers. However, after it appeared Gundy was going to stay put in Stillwater, the attention turned to the Cardinals' coach -- who was reported to be a top candidate for the job on Tuesday.
ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy reported Wednesday not only that Strong had an offer from Tennessee, but that Louisville was currently working on an extension to his current five-year deal.
Strong angrily dismissed rumors of meeting with Auburn before the Cardinals' regular- season finale against Rutgers but has since changed his tone regarding coaching searches. Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich likely has been working with the Cardinals' third-year head coach throughout this process to reach a new agreement and secure the program's football future.
Louisville (10-2, 5-2 Big East) earned its second straight share of the Big East title after defeating Rutgers on the last week of the regular season. The Cardinals earned the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the BCS and will face Florida in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.
