Cincinnati replaces TCU with Fordham in 2012 schedule
TCU's move to the Big 12 left the Bearcats with an open date in the 2012 schedule. Despite their efforts, they were unable to fill the slot with a FBS opponent.
"There's a lot of I-A schools that have one [FCS opponent] and will continue to have one," athletic director Whit Babcock said. "But two is not ideal. When TCU was going to be in the league, it's my understanding we were going to eight conference games. When they dropped out, it went back to seven, so we had to fill that game."
The Bearcats are scheduled to face Delaware State on Sept. 15 in Nippert Stadium, and have added the Fordham game for Oct. 13. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Cincinnati will open the season on either Sept. 6 or Sept. 8 at home against a Big East opponent.
The Big East is expected to announce the 2012 conference schedule soon, possibly this week.
The conference schedule had to be reworked after West Virginia negotiated their early exit from the Big East to join the Big 12. Earlier this month, the Big East announced Temple's return to the league for all sports. The Owls will take West Virginia's place as the eighth team for 2012, allowing for a seven-game conference schedule.
