Clemson QB Chad Kelly dismissed for conduct issues
Clemson has dismissed quarterback Chad Kelly from the football program for conduct detrimental to the program.
Clemson has dismissed quarterback Chad Kelly, nephew of NFL great Jim Kelly, from the football program for "conduct detrimental to our program," head coach Dabo Swinney announced on Monday.
Swinney said that the redshirt sophomore quarterback "has had a pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the values of our program."
"I hope he will mature and grow from this and become the man and player I know he can be," Swinney said. "I wish him nothing but the best in the future academically and athletically."
Kelly, a redshirt sophomore, was competing for the starting job for 2014 along with senior Cole Stoudt and freshman Deshaun Watson. Swinney has not named a starter but many fans believed that Stoudt finished spring practice as the frontrunner, in part because Kelly was benched for the second half of the team's spring game on Saturday due to a coach's decision.
"Just coach’s decision," Swinney said of the decision to bench Kelly for the second half. "Just didn’t like how he responded to Coach Morris and Coach (Jeff) Scott, so they came to me with their decision and I said yes. It was just coach’s decision. That’s it."
According to 247Sports, Kelly was removed from the West End Zone earlier today by authorities and had a meeting with the coaching staff.
Kelly posted an apparent response to the controversy on Twitter, shortly after reports of his run-in with authorities and dismissal.

Early enrollee Deshaun Watson did not play in the spring game due to a collarbone injury that did not require surgery. Watson and Stoudt will continue the quarterback competition this summer and likely into training camp this fall.
